As we all know, the government recently decided to close non-essential businesses to help contain the spread of the coronavirus. While we as health care professionals consider ourselves essential, the essence of what we do, the face to face contact and hands on treatments that we use puts both myself and my patients at an increased risk and that is why I took the decision to close the practice for the foreseeable.
While it's important that people heed the governmental advice I understand that there are people who will still be experiencing musculoskeletal pain that cannot attend a physiotherapy practice in light of the new regulations. I feel that people should still be entitled to evidenced based, professional Physiotherapy and over the last week I have been trying to adapt the clinic to provide just that. With the use of modern technology I am pleased to offer telehealth / online appointments for those requiring help.
How does it work?
Telehealth / Online appointments will be performed through a variety of online platforms that I have downloaded and subscribed to and it's easy to do. Appointments can be performed via:
- Skype
- Zoom
- Facetime
- WhatsApp
- Telephone Call
Having these at our disposal means that a large number of people can access Physiotherapy when they need it.
What about the hands on assessment / treatment?
Yes, hands on assessment and treatment is important but only forms a very small part of what we do as clinicians. Our sound knowledge of anatomy and biomechanics, the way the body moves, helps us understand potential deficits that can be addressed through movement / postural adaptations, advice and exercise. Via these online modalities we are able to assess your current movements patterns and help address accordingly.
So how would an online appointment work?
Like any Physiotherapy appointment, we would start with an initial assessment to obtain a thorough history of your injury. This can be performed soundly online and gives us a good idea of what the problem may be. Then, we would get you to perform various different movements to see what brings on your pain, and how we can modify your movements to help improve your symptoms. As usual, an exercise programme will be provided. Follow up appointments will follow very much the same pattern, modifying your programme as you continue to progress.
How much is an online consultation?
I understand that things are difficult at the moment, both physically, mentally and financially. We are all in this fight together and we need to look after one another.
That is why both the initial assessment (45 minutes) and follow up appointments (30 mins) will be £25 each (usually £40). This is a huge discount however during this team we need to ensure that we look after ourselves to the best of our abilities.
The good news is most of the private insurance companies are also allowing this form of intervention, so please do check with them
