Meralgia Paraesthetica (MP) is a condition where there is irritation or pathology to the lateral cutaneous nerve of the thigh which originates from the L2 and L3 vertebrae. It courses through the pelvis to supply the sensation to the outer part of the thigh and it is at the front of the pelvis where the nerve usually becomes irritated. Symptoms can occur spontaneously or as a secondary result of surgery.
Symptoms
People with MP will report altered sensation such as burning, aching, coldness, shooting or pins and needles down the anterior / outer part of their hip. Symptoms can fluctuate significantly from mild symptoms to an intense ache that affects function. People typically report that symptoms can improve upon sitting, where the tension at the front of the thigh reduces.
Diagnosis
Following a thorough understanding of the history and onset of your symptoms, movements of your lower back and hip will be assessed in an attempt to illicit your symptoms and also rule out any specific hip pathology. Palpation of the front of your hip where this specific nerve passes through may also illicit symptoms, confirming a diagnosis of MP.
