Shoulder Pain

Shoulder Pain

The shoulder joint is classed as a shallow ball and socket joint which permits a large range of movement. However, the integrity of the joint is maintained through a combination of synergistic muscle contraction from a group known as the ‘rotator cuff’ as well as numerous ligaments.

While many consider the shoulder joint to be comprised of the humerus (arm bone) and scapula (shoulder blade), there are many other joints the contribute to ensure efficient movement from the shoulder. These are:

•    The scapulothoracic joint
•    The glenohumeral joint
•    The sternoclavicular joint
•    The acromioclavicular joint

The main function of the shoulder is to permit range of movement in order to transport the hand to a position of function. However, due to this large range of motion that is permitted at the shoulder it can be at risk of injury.
